Garrett's Surgery Day

Garrett had his surgery today.  What a day!!!  Last night before church we took Garrett to Toys R Us and let him pick out a special toy....of course he chose Iron Man!!!  Then after church we took him to his FAVORITE resturant......Red Robin where he ate a cheese burger, french fries, and a chocolate sundae.
Then today we woke up around 7 am and took Haylee to our good friends, Will and Suzanne....THANK YOU SO MUCH YOU GUYS!!!
Garrett was so excited.  He told the nurse when we got to the pre-op waiting room...."I'm here to get my adnoids and tonsills out!"  His doctor was standing right there too and thought it was so cute how informed he was!!  We hung out in the pre-op waiting area for about 45 minutes waiting for the doctors to come talk to us. The doctor said that he would be intubated which sort of surprised us, but we were fine with it, they know what they're doing
Then the nurse came and gave Garrett some "happy juice" (Versed).  It made Garrett so funny....at times I thought I was going to pee my pants I was laughing so hard.  He would just stare off into space and then look at you and shout "HEY......"   He kept standing up on the bed and making silly faces.  .  After about 10 minutes from taking the Versed, they took Garrett back.
Gotta love the happy juice!

After about 45 minutes one of the nurses came out and told us they were done and he did great. They said that his tonsils were quite large, and there was a lot of thick non-infectious fluid in his middle ear, causing his hearing problems.  They also said he had quite a bit of puss behind his nose...they are going to culture it and but him on antibiotics...About twenty minutes after that report they said we could go see him in recovery. When we got there it was pretty sad.  He was disoriented and just crying....the nurse gave him some morphine and he dozed off....
He slept for about another hour.  The nurse said that it's pretty normal for kids to first wake up and be upset and then they usually go back to sleep and when they wake up for the 2nd time it's a lot better....and she was right!!!

He woke up the second time a little upset but no more upset than waking up from a normal nap.  I got to hold him for a little bit and then he wanted back in bed and he wanted to watch TV.  He was really afraid to take a drink for the first time and said his "throat feels bad," but finally took a drink and realized it was ok.  We had to wait for about another hour and then we got to go home.
In the car on the way home he threw up some blood, but the nurse said that it's normal from the blood he sallowed in surgery.
At home he is doing pretty good for just having surgery.  He has already eaten a couple bowls of ice cream and some pudding. He gets a little whiney every now and then, but he did just have surgery!  He is doing great, just like we knew he would.
